IT'S A BUGS LIFE
SCHOOLS across the Stockton Borough are being invited to take part in the 'Roach' project by Stockton Council's Community Safety Team.
Cockroach characters are at the heart of the project to spark the imagination of youngsters to encourage them to both become good citizens and to report crimes to Crimestoppers.
The www.saferstockton.com website will also be adapted to carry a special page where young people can report incidents or contact the team and this is linked to an interactive game that is fun and informative.
Various characters represent various types of crime, such as 'Vando' for criminal damage and 'Narco' for drug issues.
Initially piloting the project will be Egglescliffe Comprehensive School starting in January 2007.
A learning pack is available for schools which includes swap cards for all the figures, a lesson plan, CD and computer game.
Councillor Paul Kirton, Stockton Council's Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "This is a wonderful idea to spark the imagination of youngsters to be good citizens and take responsibility for the community and at the same time be a fun exercise to enjoy." The project is funded by the Neighbourhood Renewal Unit, through Stockton Renaissance.
